DISCOVER CANADA SEVENS 2020

The outrageous costumes. The thunderous cheer. The grand spectacle on and off the turf. With fan engagement like nothing else you’ve experienced, The Canada Sevens isn’t your typical tournament. Here are our best tips and tricks to help you get the most out of this wild weekend experience.

Are you new to the sport?

This is the best of rugby, a battle between 16 teams divided into four pools. Each team is seven-a-side. In each round, two teams go head-to-head in a 14-minute match of two seven-minute halves. These are fast-paced games that ensure scoring happens quickly—about every 70 seconds! Want to become an expert? Here is everything you need to know.

Wow, what are you wearing?

One tradition at the Sevens is called “fancy dress,” and the more inspired the outfit the better. Unicorns, bananas, pirates or ninja turtles are all acceptable. Just make your costume is comfortable as you may be wearing it from dawn ‘til dusk ‘til dawn—if you do Sevens the way it’s meant to be done.

What’s your play-by-day?

Plan how you are getting to and from BC Place. If you’re taking transit, the nearest sky train stations are Yaletown and Stadium Chinatown. If you’re driving, Parq Vancouver offers heated underground parking with direct access to BC Place through Gate G. There are also rideshares, such as UBER and Lyft, with pickup locations in Parq Vancouver at P1.

Can you go in and out of the stadium?

You can enter and leave BC Place at will until 3:00 p.m., each tournament day. If you leave after that, you will not be permitted to re-enter the stadium.

Where should I sit?

Dare we say general admission? That’s right, and it’s wonderful. It helps create that boisterous atmosphere as fans can move freely. You’ll be sitting, standing, applauding, and dancing all day long. Explore a range of settings and bounce between locals and countries.

Why not make a weekend out of it?

Choose from two distinct luxury hotels, the JW Marriott and the Douglas, An Autograph Collection Hotel. With direct access to BC Place onto our electric casino floor, Parq Vancouver is the ideal destination to stay and play.

What’s happening at Parq Vancouver that weekend?

On Saturday, discover an all-day happy hour at D/6 Bar & Lounge. The celebrations continue on Sunday with karaoke from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. until a DJ takes over with happy hour drinks, $10 pizza and prizes for best costumers. BC Kitchen, Vancouver’s most vibrant sports bar, is also offering food and drink specials and 10% off your bill with proof of ticket. Centre Bar will be opening at 9:00 a.m. offering a breakfast sandwich and feature drink for $9.95 until 2:30 p.m. when happy hour kicks in until 8:30 p.m.

How can I become a rugby linguist? Allow us to help.

TRY – Players want to get over the opposition’s “tryline” at the other end of the field. To do this, players can pass the ball backwards or kick the ball to move downfield. A try is worth five points.

CONVERTED TRY – After every try, the scoring team can attempt a drop-kick through the posts. This is worth two points.

DROP GOAL & PENALTY KICK – Although rare, teams can also score with a drop goal or a penalty kick between goalposts. This is worth three points.

RETURN SERVE – To make sure the other team has an even chance to return a serve, that team kicks off to the opposition after each score.

Now comes the toughest question of all: Who do you cheer for?

Teams from all over the world come to play in this heroic tournament. If you’re from Vancouver, you may think to cheer on Team Canada, but you may want to extend your reach. Team Fiji—yes, Fiji—is known to have the wildest fans after the Canadians. Whichever team or country, just be sure to get loud.

Now that you know the ins and outs of the Canada Sevens 2020, it’s time to check the schedule, purchase your tickets and prepare to get fancy!
